Poem on the first day — Signals from the Red Eclipse

Signals from        the Red Eclipse                       by Max Wolf Valerio

hybrid green      spectacular        ovoid

enclosed by wire

edenic black       stealthy            octagonal and blind

sliding into the water

the perpetrators of the attack      are spectral —

suicide teachers

swollen through shining curtains

faces mauled clawing

at plastic

surfaces

stippled with short light

extensions

of

war

targeting civilian

populations

with hammers

and smoke

thousands of days

on a grid

surgical

incisions a tapestry of stars

the skin crisscrossed with wild, looping stitches

soft yet taut  —

power absolute       yet tenuous

on fire with

rage

remnants

skeletal and smooth

against artificial

sand

tanks  become visible     slowly bobbing up on shifting horizons

black and red     explosive as

              veils lift

helicopters

hover above spiraling  crowds

a portal            in crossing lights       barely visible

emergence

from a distance punctuated by air strikes         floating airships         pale fat moons

adorn the lip of the water

insomnia     expansion of threats and metal against eyelids

closing and opening into the frigid air

awakening

an

  elevation of  the head

above the body
